Health Initiatives
Senior Citizens - Addressing Dementia and Alzheimer's
To raise awareness of how Dementia and Alzheimer’s are impacting the community, The Prince George’s County (MD) and The Mount Rose (MD) Chapters of The Links, Incorporated and White Rose Foundation Inc. sponsored a free community service program with experts in the field. White Rose Foundation President, The Honorable Gloria G. Lawlah, kicked off the program presented as a Green Table Talk. She pointed out how important it is to recognize the early signs of these Dementia/Alzheimer’s in family members and to address the impact on families and the community of the growing numbers of persons with these conditions.
An expert panel, shared information on recognizing signs of the condition, treatments, financial implications and coping with the impacts on family members. Dr. Sharon Allison-Ottey facilitated the panel. Panelists were, Karyne Jones, Stephanie J. Monroe, Marita Golden, The Honorable Rushern Baker, and Vickki Kalistsi.

Telepharmacy Demonstration Project
This initiative serves seniors at the newly built Belnor Senior Residency Facility in Suitland, Maryland. Objectives are to connect seniors to trusted, licensed clinical pharmacists via telehealth model for non-emergency medication information.
Services support interactive, HIPPA-secured telehealth environment to complete and update seniors’ medication list and monitor medication related goals; empower seniors to improve coordination of medication management with their providers; and promote proper medication use and safety for seniors.

Fit Healthy Lifestyle Club
Obesity and its related health conditions are major problems in our society. The rise in childhood obesity is particularly alarming. Organizations, corporations, and health care providers are taking steps to address this issue. WRF seeks to address this issue through an initiative titled Healthy Families—Learn the Facts—Eat Healthy and-- Get Active.

Organizations, corporations, and health care providers are taking steps to address this issue. WRF seeks to address this issue through an initiative titled Healthy Families—Learn the Facts—Eat Healthy and-- Get Active.
Under this initiative the “#IFit Healthy Lifestyle Club” is an experiential engaging and informative after school program for the students at Drew-Freeman Middle School in Suitland, Maryland. WRF has carried out this program since 2013 which focuses on working with the students, their families and the school to build healthy lifestyle choices that can impact obesity levels among middle school students. The goal of this program is to encourage healthier eating habits and increased physical activity, which promotes an improved quality of life. The program offers interactive fun, physical activities, nutrition information, grocery shopping, field trips, and preparation of tasty healthy foods. It is believed that such healthy lifestyle changes will reduce diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Educational Initiatives
WRF is committed to supporting initiatives designed to improve performance and enrich the experiences of students in the County’s public schools. These have included mentoring and tutoring in the Samuel Massie Elementary School.
Providing funding and resources to elementary and middle schools for initiatives to increase literacy skills through book distributions and creative approaches such as “Eliminating the Summer Slide” which provides struggling readers in grades K-3 summer resources to prevent learning loss during the summer months through the use of family take home literacy kits. Decades of research indicates that summer vacation increases the achievement gap in reading between low income children and their middle class peers.
Supporting initiatives in middle schools to increase the competency of students in STEM areas and developing the skills and abilities they will need to succeed in STEM occupation
